Grand car boot sale and spring floralies in the bastide of Saint-Clar, capital of white garlic from Lomagne
Every first Sunday of May, the bastide of Saint-Clar (32380) hosts its grand car boot sale and spring floralies. One hundred exhibitors take over the squares and streets of this medieval town with two covered market squares, the capital of white garlic from Lomagne. Flea market items and everyday objects are displayed alongside trees, flowers, aromatic plants, and vegetables offered by local producers, some of whom use organic farming methods. A festive and colorful event in one of the most beautiful villages in the Gers.
Every first Sunday of May, the bastide of Saint-Clar (32380) comes alive with a doubly attractive event: a grand car boot sale bringing together about a hundred exhibitors and floralies offered by local producers and nurserymen. The two covered market squares of the bastide, the adjacent streets, and the surroundings of the medieval market hall are transformed into a vast open-air market where it's pleasant to stroll in the gentle Gers spring weather.
The car boot sale stands spread out across the squares and streets of Saint-Clar from 9 a.m. onwards. Tableware, small furniture, clothing, tools, books, records, toys, and various trinkets make up a rich and varied offering. Savvy bargain hunters know that these Gascon bastide car boot sales sometimes hide real treasures: Southwestern earthenware, turned wood objects, old embroidered linens, and mementos of a preserved rural way of life. Admission is free for visitors.
In parallel with the car boot sale, the floralies bring together local producers offering fruit trees, vegetable plants, seasonal flowers, aromatic plants, and perennials. Some producers cultivate using organic farming methods, guaranteeing healthy and environmentally friendly plants. It's the ideal opportunity for gardeners to stock up their balconies, vegetable patches, and gardens as the warmer weather approaches, while benefiting from expert advice.
Founded in 1274 by a co-lordship agreement between Edward I of England and the Bishop of Lectoure, Saint-Clar-de-Lomagne is a bastide with remarkable heritage. Its rare peculiarity lies in its two covered market squares (cornières), its medieval market hall classified as a historic monument with 13th-century wooden pillars, and its old stone and half-timbered houses. The bastide is famous for being the capital of white garlic from Lomagne, an exceptional product benefiting from a protected geographical indication, celebrated every summer during the Garlic Festival. Shops and restaurants in Saint-Clar are open on the day of the car boot sale, allowing visitors to extend their stay with a gastronomic discovery of Lomagne in the Gers.
