Annual car boot sale organized by the parents' association at the foot of Sainte-Anne hill, in a Provençal village with a rich medieval heritage
The Car boot sale of the APE of Lançon-Provence is held every year on the Sainte-Anne hill site, near the municipal park, avenue François Mitterrand. Organized by the APE Moulin de Laure (APE Village), this family event brings together about a hundred private exhibitors from 8 am to 4 pm. Entry is free and visitors can enjoy a refreshment stand with on-site catering and bouncy castles for children. Lançon-Provence, a Provençal village perched between Salon-de-Provence and the étang de Berre, is dominated by its 12th-century medieval castle built by the Seigneurs des Baux, whose elliptical fortified silhouette flanked by square towers is a remarkable monument of local heritage.
Each year, the APE Moulin de Laure, a branch of the APE Village association bringing together parents of schoolchildren from Lançon-Provence, organizes a large car boot sale on the colline Sainte-Anne site. This green space, located below the municipal park along avenue François Mitterrand, offers a pleasant setting for this outdoor treasure hunt day. About a hundred private exhibitors set up their stalls from 6 am, while the public is welcomed from 8 am to 4 pm to rummage, negotiate, and find bargains.
Lançon-Provence gets its name from the Celto-Ligurian 'Lan', meaning rocky promontory, and Latin 'Coenum', referring to the marshes that once surrounded the village. Perched on its hill, the town is dominated by its imposing 12th-century medieval castle, built by the Seigneurs des Baux due to the strategic position of the site overlooking the Touloubre valley. This fortress, with its unique elliptical design in Provence flanked by square towers connected by machicolations on arcades, testifies to the military power of its builders. The old village has retained its original medieval layout, particularly in the small rue Marone, one of the oldest districts of the town. Romanesque chapels, 18th-century dovecotes, and the Château Calissanne vineyard complete a heritage of remarkable richness.
The car boot sale of the APE of Lançon-Provence offers the classic range of second-hand items sold by individuals: clothing and accessories, toys and games for children, books and comics, crockery and decorative items, small furniture, trinkets, and various curiosities. The atmosphere is that of an authentic village car boot sale, where conviviality and neighborly exchanges are as important as the deals made. Prices, set freely by the exhibitors, remain very affordable, and haggling is an integral part of the pleasure of treasure hunting.
The event is designed to welcome families in the best conditions. A refreshment stand with catering is set up on-site throughout the day, allowing visitors to quench their thirst and eat between laps of the stalls. For the younger ones, bouncy castles are available, turning this treasure hunting day into a real family outing. The profits from the event are donated to the APE Village to fund school projects and activities in the commune, thus giving this day a solidarity and associative dimension.
A commune of over 8,000 inhabitants, Lançon-Provence benefits from a privileged geographical location in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, halfway between Salon-de-Provence and the shores of the étang de Berre. Served by the A7 motorway and the national road, the town is easily accessible while preserving its authentic Provençal village character. The Complexe Sportif Marcel Pagnol, the ITER track, and the municipal park bear witness to a dynamic associative and sporting life. The APE's car boot sale is fully in line with this tradition of local entertainment that enriches village life in Provence.
