Annual flea market on May 1st in the village of Margès, Drôme
May 1st is a particularly good date for flea markets and car boot sales in France: the Labour Day public holiday frees up schedules and invites people to go for a walk. Margès, a small village in northern Drôme located in the canton of l'Herbasse, has made this event a popular annual tradition. Private exhibitors and professional dealers gather every May 1st to offer their items to treasure hunters from the region.
Antique furniture, tableware, tools, trinkets, clothing, and books are displayed in the village squares and alleys, which come alive for a day. The typical rural festival atmosphere of the Drôme villages, far from the hustle and bustle of large fairs, is one of the charms of this rural flea market.
Margès is a commune of a few hundred inhabitants, nestled in the hills of l'Herbasse, north of the Drôme department. This micro-region, between the Rhône and the Vercors, is a preserved rural area, marked by its vineyards, orchards, and golden stone villages. The May 1st flea market is one of the main events in this village, which also comes alive in November for a second edition.
