Summer hunt on the iconic square of a perched village in the Pays de Fayence
The Place du Clos, the beating heart of Montauroux in the Pays de Fayence uplands, hosts a monthly flea market mixing private sellers and small dealers. Under the century-old plane trees and Provençal facades, bargain hunters browse old crockery, books and unexpected finds. A typical morning of Provençal hinterland atmosphere, a stone's throw from Lake Saint-Cassien.
Perched on its rocky outcrop at 400 metres, Montauroux lies in the high Var on the border of the Alpes-Maritimes, near Lake Saint-Cassien. Its Place du Clos, lined with plane trees and ochre-toned facades, is one of the most photogenic spots in the Provence hinterland for a flea market.
The 9 August 2026 edition is part of a series of recurring flea markets throughout the year in Montauroux. Stalls come from the Var and the neighbouring Alpes-Maritimes, balancing private sellers with occasional dealers. Browsing is slow, sheltered from the summer sun under the leafy canopy.
Montauroux preserves striking authenticity with its cobbled lanes, its baroque Saint-Barthélemy chapel and its parish church. After browsing, wander the lanes, stop at a terrace or head down to Lake Saint-Cassien for a swim.
The 9 August edition falls in peak summer, promising a lively crowd of residents, holidaymakers and seasoned hunters. Polite bargaining and gentle pace make for the Provençal village charm that defines inland Var flea markets.
