Coupvray, Louis Braille's Birthplace

Coupvray is a small village in Seine-et-Marne steeped in an exceptional history: it is here, on January 4, 1809, that Louis Braille was born, the inventor of the famous tactile writing system that today allows blind people around the world to read and write. As a child, Louis Braille accidentally injured his eye while trying to imitate his father, who was a harness maker. This injury gradually led to the total loss of his sight before the age of five. His birthplace, transformed into a museum in 1956 and labeled Maisons des Illustres by the Ministry of Culture, is located below the village.
