The grand village brocante in the Gapeau valley
Organised by the Meoun Antic association, this large flea market and brocante gathers around 200 exhibitors across the whole of Belgentier, in the Gapeau valley. Private sellers, dealers and collectors fill the lanes, squares and village surroundings in a festive Provençal atmosphere. A must-attend autumn date in Var bargain hunting.
Belgentier is a little gem nestled in the Gapeau valley, halfway between Toulon and the upper Var. This Provençal village, famed for its bridge and plane trees, spends the first weekend of September at the rhythm of one of the biggest flea markets in the department: around 200 exhibitors spread across the village, hundreds of metres of stalls, thousands of visitors from Toulon, Hyères, Marseille and beyond.
The Meoun Antic association, chaired by Cucchi Mireille, runs the whole operation with proven efficiency. Vendors set up from 6am, public opening at 8am and the event runs until 6:30pm. Registration forms circulate months ahead, by email, SMS or directly at Belgentier town hall. Pitches are spread across squares, lanes, Gapeau banks and village surroundings.
Diversity is Belgentier's strength: antiques, old Provençal furniture, vintage pieces, lamps, crockery and porcelain, santons, curios, old books, postcards, toys, vintage clothing, antique jewellery, tools, kitchenware, vinyl, decor. Professional dealers rub shoulders with private sellers clearing three generations of objects.
Several car parks (3-4 areas, including Parc Peiresc opposite the event) ease access. Two bars, a food service and a refreshment stand quench the crowd all day. Toilets on site. Some areas are shadier than others — bring an umbrella for sun or showers.
Belgentier is quintessential picture-postcard Provence: the Gapeau river winding under old bridges, century-old plane trees shading the squares, ochre façades and local-produce shops. Wandering the market is a journey into Var heritage while making great deals.
