Traditional flea market and bernache fair in the heart of the village of Saint-Genou, Indre Valley
The Brocante and Bernache Fair of Saint-Genou is an iconic autumn event in Berry. Every October, the village center comes alive with a large flea market combined with a fair dedicated to bernache, the new wine of the Val de Loire. Bargain hunters and lovers of Berry traditions gather for a festive day of flea marketing, tasting, and conviviality.
Every October, the village of Saint-Genou celebrates the arrival of bernache, this grape juice in early fermentation that marks the grape harvest in Berry. The event combines a large flea market open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a fair where this ephemeral drink is tasted, accompanied by fouaces and other local specialties. Professionals and individuals set up their stalls in the village to offer furniture, trinkets, antique tableware, tools, books, and collector's items.
Saint-Genou is a charming village of about 1,000 inhabitants located in the Indre valley, between Buzançais and Châtillon-sur-Indre. The commune is famous for its 11th-century Romanesque abbey church, a remnant of a Benedictine priory, whose sculpted capitals are among the most beautiful in Berry. The village retains an authentic rural heritage with its limestone houses, washhouses, and shaded banks of the Indre.
The bernache fair adds a gourmet and festive dimension to the flea market. The Saint-Genou brass band livens up the streets, a meal under a marquee is offered by reservation, and a raffle is organized for the benefit of charitable associations. Admission is free and the atmosphere reflects the generosity and joie de vivre of the Berry region.
The brocante and bernache fair of Saint-Genou returns in October 2026.
