Plant and seedling exchange in the heart of the Plateau de Versailles
The Crespières plant exchange is an annual spring event dedicated to amateur and passionate gardeners. On the Mairie square, about 175 individuals exchange, give or trade plants, cuttings, seedlings, seeds and vegetable plants in a friendly, non-commercial atmosphere. An ecological and community-minded event typical of small rural Yvelines villages, rooted in local horticultural tradition.
Every spring, the Mairie square in Crespières hosts its annual plant exchange, a much-appreciated rendezvous for local gardeners. Far from large commercial horticultural fairs, this human-scale event is based on a simple principle: exchange and donation between individuals. About a hundred amateur gardeners come together to share seedlings, cuttings, seeds, vegetable plants and young plants from their gardens.
The plant exchange is not a classic horticultural market: here, people come first and foremost to give, trade or receive. This mode of operation, inherited from long peasant traditions of seed sharing, is enjoying a significant revival among lovers of permaculture, biodiversity and gardening autonomy. By preserving local, old or rustic varieties sometimes forgotten by commerce, plant exchanges actively contribute to the plant diversity of French gardens.
Participants generally bring what they have in excess in their garden: tomato, pepper, zucchini, lettuce and other seasonal vegetable seedlings; cuttings of shrubs, roses and perennial plants; flower clump divisions; young fruit trees; carefully harvested and labeled seeds. Some gardeners also offer their knowledge, tips and advice to beginners, making the plant exchange both a friendly and educational event.
A small rural community on the Plateau de Versailles, Crespières is located in a preserved area of Yvelines, between the Marly-le-Roi forest and the agricultural plain. The village, crossed by several hiking trails, is surrounded by large estates and cereal land that give it a country character. Visitors can extend their day with a walk around Davron, Feucherolles, Saint-Nom-la-Bretèche or head to the nearby Versailles castle.
Whether you are an experienced gardener or an enthusiastic beginner, the Crespières plant exchange is an excellent opportunity to stock your vegetable garden or flower bed at low cost, while meeting people sharing the same passion. You learn a lot, often leave with arms full, and make real gardening connections. A spring rendezvous not to be missed for all lovers of greenery and nature.
